Finding My Voice Through "Sparrow"

For all my life I’ve lived with a low vision disability and it’s something I’ve learned to accept as a part of my humanness. But in 2021, my relationship with vision—and with myself—was tested in a way I never expected.

That year, a sudden spike in glaucoma pressure almost took away the little sight I had left. The first verse of "Sparrow" walks you through what that moment felt like: the stumbling, the fear, the desperate hope that life might somehow snap back to the way it was. In the lyrics, “Paralyzed I waited for my world to reform, as days spun like a whirlwind through the night,” I tried to capture that longing—the way you hold on for normalcy, even when deep down you know things have changed. Learning to live in a new way can be terrifying, but it can also open up new ways of seeing and being.

Shortly after that scare, I began experiencing chronic pain. The second verse of "Sparrow" touches on that journey—the harsh reality of flare-ups, but also the relentless, gritted-teeth kind of optimism that pain teaches you. Some days, survival itself feels like a victory. But even in the hardest moments, there are always little pieces of joy to be found. When you hit rock bottom, you have to search for that first small step—the one that leads you back into the light.

The chorus speaks to the tension between grief and acceptance that often comes with disability. Learning a new way to live isn’t easy. But finding even the smallest reasons to smile helps to nurture the light that lives within each of us.

As a Florida native, one of my favorite places to recharge is my back porch. Sitting there with a cup of tea, listening to the gentle songs of the birds, brings me peace. That’s where the image of the sparrow comes in—it’s about finding my voice again, about sharing my story through music.

I hope "Sparrow" resonates with anyone who listens. I hope it brings a sense of warmth and peace, a reminder that sorrow is never forever, that you are not forgotten, and that you belong here just as much as the sun belongs in the sky. With each sunrise, you rise too.

I’m so excited to share that "Sparrow" will be released on April 30, 2025.
The Flat Moon Theory crew and I would love for you to give it a listen—and stay tuned, because we’ll be sharing more soon about our next album, Give Your Flowers.
